Plant a Seed – Change a Law
This is the message being spread by Jason and Jennifer Helvenston of Orlando, Florida as they fight their city for the right to grow food on their own property. Originally facing the loss of their front yard vegetable garden based on a complaint by the owner of a nearby rental property, charges have now been levied against their side and back yards as the City attempts to force them to give up their right to grow.
The Helvenston’s are fighting back, contesting the City’s bylaw and selling Patriot Garden signs to help support them through this difficult process.
Contact Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and City Council to protest their proposed restrictions and sign the Change.org petition! Orlando’s treatment of this garden directly contradicts its ‘Green-Up Orlando’ policies. Remind them that “Community Gardens strengthen community bonds, provide food, and create recreational and therapeutic opportunities for a community.” Take your garden to the streets!
